Our campus has ranges. It has a range of buildings, a range of lawns and most importantly, a range of energies. Each building has a different rhythm and its own vibe. So, if these buildings were songs, here’s what they would sound like.
“The Rite of Spring” — Igor Stravinsky: Blair School of Music
Blair is home to the students who make music their passion and a second language. They can instantly pick out chord progressions and make sound an art. Notoriously difficult to play, “The Rite of Spring” reflects that beautiful, bold and near-daunting nature Blair brings. It fundamentally captures the beauty, intensity and discipline that define Blair.
“Tokyo Drift” — Teriyaki Boyz: The Rec
The Rec is in constant motion with athletes, gym-goers and even theater students rehearsing. Between games, workouts and rehearsals, “Tokyo Drift” matches the fast pace of adrenaline-filled students with a high-intensity beat and a melody line that builds momentum.
“Dumbledore’s Army” – Nicholas Hooper: Café Carmichael
Stepping into Café Carmichael feels like walking into a cozy, Harry Potter-like dining hall. Its warm lighting, wooden arches and steady background noise make it a natural workspace. As such, “Dumbledore’s Army” fits that soft-focus, collaborative energy perfectly and even mirrors its fantastical nature.
“Solar Power” — Lorde: EBI
Not into cafés? That’s fine. Off to EBI, where the dining hall is accompanied by beautiful courtyards and patios. EBI has this cool, laid-back vibe while holding on to something innovative, fresh and new. Situated at the heart of campus, the sun flows into the courtyard and patio all day long, making “Solar Power” the perfect fit.
“It’s Raining Men” — The Weather Girls: Kissam
If you ever spend time in Kissam, you know that between students heading to class, getting food or hanging out with friends, Kissam is bustling with energy. However, there is one thing that never changes: the Weather Channel playing on the lobby TV. So, when talking about musical vibes, “It’s Raining Men” is a perfect match, and you couldn’t convince me otherwise.
“Birds of A Feather” — Billie Eilish: Garland Hall
Garland Hall is sleek, bright and has a modern intensity. It has all these hidden nooks and mysterious crannies and the most amazing study spots. “Birds of A Feather” pushes that sleekness even further. It even adds to the sense of mystery and self-discovery that comes with a brand-new building.
“perfect blues” — hannah bahng: Buttrick Hall
Do you want to stick to something that is a little more familiar? That’s fine. Just hop across the lawn to Buttrick. There’s this super subtle historical, soulful feeling that is drawn out of the academic atmosphere of the building. Buttrick is a place where students can easily lose themselves in their work, and “perfect blues” does the perfect job reflecting that nature and highlighting the introspective qualities of students in Buttrick.
“The Bruise” — Damiano David feat. Suki Waterhouse: Central Library
Want something classic instead? Take a walk to Central and grab a snack from Suzie’s if you choose. Central Library is unforgiving in a way with its tight stacks, yet it provides the perfect environment to get some work done. It provides a contemplativeness and sense of emotional depth and maturity for you to actually get work done. “The Bruise” is exactly that. It is tight with emotion but provides a haunting beauty to fuel those “aha, I got it” moments.
“El Tejano” — Lauv, Sofia Reyes: Mayborn & Magnolia 6
Finally, take a hike to Commons. This playful and lighthearted nature of “El Tejano” complements the lively nature of Mayborn and Magnolia 6. You can find students of all ages in these halls, and you will always find students working together. This infectious energy draws everyone in, whether it is for classes, to study or beyond.
