Guest submissions
All Vanderbilt students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, staff and other community members are encouraged to submit guest editorials and Letters to the Editor for review and possible publication. Please review the guidelines below before submitting through our form here: https://airtable.com/shrQzOjngKG1SXDms
Policies & guidelines
- We welcome op-eds from members of the Vanderbilt community who are not on The Hustler’s staff. We do not allow non-Vanderbilt-related op-eds.
- We reserve the right to edit submissions, determine whether to publish guest submissions based on our discretion and decide the publication timeline for submissions. The submission of a guest editorial does not guarantee publication.
- The publication of guest submissions doesn’t reflect the opinions or beliefs of The Hustler or its affiliates, only the views of the author(s).
- Guest editorials: Guest editorials must focus on making an argument about Vanderbilt in some way. We prefer guest editorials to remain at no more than 1,000 words.
- Letters to the Editor (LTE): Letters to the Editor are more brief responses to a news or opinion piece recently published in The Hustler. We recommend that these remain under 250 words. They must relate to a particular piece published in The Hustler and must be submitted within a week of the publication of the piece to which they react or respond. At the discretion of the Editorial Director and Editor-in-Chief, letters to the editor may be published in groups.
- Guest editorials and LTE may be eligible for anonymous/pseudonym publishing in cases of threats to the author’s safety and/or health privacy. These will follow anonymity guidelines for The Hustler and will be applied at the discretion of the editorial team.
What to expect after submitting
- Submitting a guest editorial does not guarantee publication. Timelines of publication may vary and are not guaranteed to follow a guest writer’s request.
- The Hustler may work with a writer to create graphics, photos, or data visualizations to accompany their piece.
- Guest editorials will undergo an editing process, just as any other opinion pieces published in The Hustler. Please be patient with the editing process and open to collaboration with the editorial team.
