As the snow and ice across Vanderbilt’s campus slowly begin to melt, we reflect back on the past week. From a dominant women’s basketball team to the catastrophic landfall of Winter Storm Fern, we look at the great and the not-so-great this week.
Winter Storm Fern
As Nashville slowly begins to recover from the snowfall and ice from Winter Storm Fern, we look back at all of the fluffy snow and trees that fell down this week. The winter conditions prompted the Vanderbilt administration to cancel classes via periodic public announcements throughout the week. From fallen lampposts to branches falling from above, people on campus were warned to have caution while walking this week, with Vanderbilt facilities staff still working to clear some parts of campus in preparation for the return of classes next week.
Looking back on the Lady Commodores
Before their Jan. 25 match with South Carolina, Vanderbilt Women’s Basketball was undefeated. In their Jan. 22 matchup against Auburn, the Commodores had a sluggish first half, only scoring 33 points in the first half, before recovering with a 48-point second half. Interestingly, the Commodore’s star player, Mikayla Blakes, did not score a single point in the first ten minutes of the game; her peer Commodores helped keep their performance on track, with Aubrey Galvan scoring 7 points within the first quarter. The game ended with an 81-53 Vanderbilt win.
Stanaj rocks The Basement East
On Jan. 22, Albanian singer Stanaj rocked the Basement East alongside his openers, Clark Beckham and Jack Avery, in anticipation of his new album. The night started with Beckham, who introduced himself as a Nashville native, which ended in a cover of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” Avery then took the stage, starting off his set with a performance of his newest song, “Take the Wheel,” which highlighted much of his recent struggles. Avery also debuted an unreleased song in his set, appearing to captivate the crowd before ending with his song “Come to Brazil.” By 9 p.m. CST, Stanaj began his set on his first headlining tour. His performance was full of bright energy, with Stanaj calling himself dramatic while doing regular temperature checks of the crowd’s energy. He wrapped up his set with the unreleased single “Loaded Gun.”
