Vanderbilt junior guard George Kimble III plans to enter the transfer portal, as first reported by Sam Kayser. The Florida native did not play a single game for Vanderbilt in the 2025-26 season, recovering from an injury he sustained at Eastern Kentucky in his sophomore season. Kimble was expected to be a key piece to head coach Mark Byington’s 2026-27 squad, but it seems he’ll be departing the Commodores to take his talents elsewhere.

Kimble transferred to the Commodores a year ago after an incredible sophomore season at Eastern Kentucky, where he averaged 18 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. He landed on the Second Team All-Atlantic Sun after that sophomore campaign, but suffered an injury as the season came to an end. Kimble ended up rehabbing that injury this season at Vanderbilt, not appearing in any games.

Now, Byington will have plenty of work to do in the transfer portal, which officially opened on April 7. With the loss of Kimble and star point guard Tyler Tanner still weighing his decision to go the NBA Draft, the second-year head coach will need to find at least two guards in the transfer portal. Forwards Devin McGlockton and Jalen Washington are also out of eligibility, meaning he’ll need to find some bigs to secure a strong frontcourt.

Kimble’s departure marks Vanderbilt’s third player to enter the transfer portal, as he joins Jaylon Dean-Vines and Frankie Collins. As Byington has done each year since he stepped on West End, he’ll likely bring in a large transfer class to craft next season’s roster.
