Tyler Tanner is officially returning to Vanderbilt for his junior season, according to his Instagram.

The Brentwood, Tennessee native played his way into the hearts of the Commodore faithful after an impressive freshman season — one during which he excelled on the defensive end in just 20.5 minutes per game. Despite the limited playing time, he racked up 1.7 steals per game, which was good enough to earn him the 11th-highest average in the SEC in 2024-25.
Tanner did not truly break out, though, until he was given the keys to the offense by head coach Mark Byington during his sophomore season. The 6’0 guard averaged an efficient 19.5 points, 5.1 assists and 2.4 steals per game while seeing his offensive workload jump significantly, as seen in a +13 minutes-per-game increase. In doing so, Tanner earned himself an All-American Honorable Mention while being named to the All-SEC First Team and All-SEC Defensive Team.
Dubbed a “hometown hero” by fans and analysts alike, Tanner did not elect to enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal following his promising first season on West End. Instead, he stayed anchored down in Nashville, a decision that turned out to be successful for his career progression.
Now, Tanner has made it official and will be back in the Music City for his third season of basketball as a Commodore. As one of the best returners in the nation, there is speculation that he could garner some more hardware before the start of the 2026-27 season — either as SEC Preseason Player of the Year or as a Preseason All-American. Time will only tell if these anticipations come true, but until then, fans can rejoice at Tanner’s return to Vanderbilt.
