Vanderbilt outfielder RJ Austin was selected with the 93rd pick in the 2025 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles.
A draft-eligible rising senior, Austin became a cornerstone of Vanderbilt’s baseball program when he arrived to campus in 2022. For the last three seasons, the right-handed hitter earned consistent playing time and praise from head coach Tim Corbin for his throwback style of play and unrelenting grit on the field. Austin slashed .283 with 14 homeruns and 139 RBIs in his 181 games as a Commodore.
Austin’s elite speed, flashy defense and high baseball IQ give him a higher floor than most prospects, though his offensive production dipped in his junior season at Vanderbilt. If he can unlock more power at the plate, Austin has the potential to become a major-league contributor for the Orioles within the next few seasons.
Austin has also shown elite defensive versatility, playing multiple premium positions including middle infield, first base and center field during his three seasons with the Commodores. Austin especially shined in the outfield in 2025, earning a spot on the SEC All-Defensive team. The Atlanta native’s glove and flexibility could help him avoid positional logjams within the Orioles organization and accelerate his path through the minors.
Off the field, Austin has made a big impact with his leadership and energy. A natural leader and positive presence, Austin is well respected in both the clubhouse and greater Nashville community — evidenced by his selection to the SEC Community Service Team in 2024.
With this pick, the Orioles are getting a high-floor player with five-tool potential and the work ethic to match.
