As the weather begins to warm up, it’s time to dive into Nashville’s greatest lakes. Nashville — yes, a landlocked city — has plenty of nearby rivers and lakes ready to dive into. This is the perfect excuse to take a study break from finals and an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature. As the sun’s heat beams down on us, the cry to be by a body of water is getting louder. If you are staying for Maymester or for the entire summer, adventuring to these swimming holes is a great way to get off campus. Stop relying on air conditioning or false promises of invites to a friend’s pool. Take the initiative yourself, get out and explore!

Harpeth River

Distance from Vanderbilt campus: 13 miles

1104 Moran Rd, Franklin, Tenn. 37069

This historical river has one of the oldest man-made tunnels once used to provide water to a long-lost iron foundry. There is a small swimming hole on the other side of the hand-carved 100-yard stone underground passageway. If you wish to keep it simple, don’t fear, Harpeth River also has several small beaches and a five-mile float open to swimmers, canoes and kayak trips. The long-stretching river has multiple swimming holes and rocky beaches available for visitors. Keep a look out for rope swings along the banks to jump into the water!

Percy Priest Lake

Distance from Vanderbilt campus: 14 miles

3737 Bell Road Nashville, Tenn. 37214

A short drive from Vanderbilt’s campus, Percy Priest Lake is a classic for many Vanderbilt students. This 42-mile reservoir offers lake-goers with a variety of adventures. From cliff jumping to laying out by the rocks, Percy Priest is a perfect option for those looking to swim in a cool body of water. On a warm weekend, you can expect the lake to be filled with pontoons, kayaks and paddle boarders. The surrounding area of the lake also offers fire pits, camping sites and fishing spots for extra recreational activities.

Long Hunter State Park

Distance from Vanderbilt campus: 27 miles

2910 Hobson Pike, Hermitage, Tenn. 37076

Long Hunter State Park is just a few miles down the shore of Percy Priest Lake. Take the four-mile low-elevation Bryant Grove trail to reach the curated beach. Expect to find beach volleyball courts and swimmers along Bryant Grove or jump off the dock at the Couchville Lake shoreside. If swimming is not your thing, pack a picnic and spend the day at the park.

Old Hickory Lake

Distance from Vanderbilt campus: 29 miles

5 Power Plant Road, Hendersonville, Tenn. 37075

Created by the Old Hickory Dam on the Cumberland River, Old Hickory Lake is another great option near Nashville. With three accessible swimming areas, Old Hickory Lake is a picturesque spot for water enthusiasts. If you can access a boat, anchor yourself at the “Two Foot Cove” for a fun day under the sun. Cast out your fishing rods and try to catch the variety of bass and catfish abundant in the lake.

Cummins Falls State Park

Distance from Vanderbilt campus: 64 miles

390 Cummins Falls Ln, Cookville, Tenn. 38501

Located further out from the city, Cummins Fall State Park is one of the more scenic adventures. With a 75-foot waterfall, the state park has glorious swimming holes surrounded by rock formations and trees. However, pack your hiking shoes as it’s a hefty two-and-a-half-mile hike to reach the falls. The climb is worth it for the day of swimming and the sound of water running under the sun.

Center Hill Lake

Miles from Vanderbilt campus: 78 miles

Center Hill Lake, Silver Point, Tenn. 38582

If you are looking for a day trip excursion, Center Hill Lake might be the spot for you. Rent a cabin for the weekend or grab a campsite by the lakeside. Filled with breathtaking views from the cliffside and hiking trails in the deep forest, there is a lot to explore at Center Hill Lake. Check out the waterfalls along the shoreline via boat tour or swim into the crystal clear waters for a peaceful getaway from the city.
