No Kings protests occurred across the country on Oct. 18. The Hustler staff was in Washington, D.C. for a journalism conference, MediaFest, and covered the ongoing protest. The march began at the Smithsonian Metro Station at 10:30 a.m. EDT and headed toward the National Mall, where the speaker event was held.
The first No Kings protest was held on June 14 across all 50 states in response to the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary military parade in Washington, D.C., which corresponded with President Donald Trump’s birthday. At that time, an estimated five million people in the U.S. took to the streets to protest Trump’s policies.
The second wave of protests is estimated to have had nearly seven million people in attendance, making it the largest single–day demonstration in U.S. history. The protests spanned across the U.S., with 2,500 demonstrations being held.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders applauded protesters for attending the protest in his speech.
“Our country is in danger when the President undermines freedom of thought and dissent at our colleges and universities,” Sanders said.
The protests have garnered national attention for the demonstrators’ messaging against President Trump’s administration.
