Vanderbilt Football has brought in former wide receiver Jordan Matthews as an offensive consultant, per release.
Matthews, who had unofficially been with the team since the fall camp, is now being hired in an official capacity to serve as a consultant for the team. While he has yet to announce his retirement from the NFL, the former Commodore will return to his alma mater to take on a coaching position, working with and mentoring a relatively unproven wide receiver room.
He is the SEC’s all-time leader in career receptions with 262 and is second in career receiving yards with 3759. In 2013, Matthews produced one of the most prolific statistical seasons in program history, accumulating 112 receptions for 1477 yards and seven touchdowns during his senior year. These totals earned him First Team All-America honors from USA Today and Athlon, as well as the distinction of being named a consensus First Team All-SEC wide receiver.
Following an incredibly productive four-year college career, Matthews was drafted 42nd overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2014 NFL Draft. He played three seasons with the Eagles before being traded to the Buffalo Bills and returning to Philadelphia just a season later. He made his way to the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Carolina Panthers as a tight end in 2023 and 2024.
Matthews will bring his knowledge and experience of playing in the NFL to the Commodores’ coaching staff. Vanderbilt will look to recuperate during the upcoming bye week after losing to No. 8 Alabama in Tuscaloosa this past weekend.
