Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball has landed its fourth transfer of the offseason, as former NC State guard Mike James has committed to play in black and gold. His commitment was first announced by Joe Tipton of On3 Sports.
James, 6’5, brings size to the Commodores’ backcourt in the wake of AJ Hoggard and Chris Manon’s departures. He did not play for the Wolfpack during the 2024-25 season after suffering a knee injury during practice.
The guard spent his first two years of college at Louisville before transferring to NC State. He most recently averaged 12.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game during the 2023-24 season and scored over 17 points on nine occasions.
James is a career 34.8% 3-point shooter on 3.2 attempts per game; he’ll look to be a leading force for a Vanderbilt offensive attack that lost Jason Edwards earlier in the transfer portal window.
James redshirted his freshman season in 2021-22. He has not officially announced an application for a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA that would give him an additional year of eligibility. If he applies for and receives the waiver, he will have two seasons of eligibility remaining, should he choose to use them.
Head coach Mark Byington and Co. have been active in the portal, also landing Frankie Collins, Jaylen Washington and Mason Nicholson. The Commodores still have work to do, but James’s commitment marks another step in the right direction.
