Vanderbilt Baseball (25-18, 9-10 SEC) dropped the first game of its series against the No. 4 Texas Longhorns (31-8, 12-6 SEC) by a score of 11-4 Friday, April 24. Vanderbilt’s starting pitcher Connor Fennell had a night to forget, allowing nine earned runs over 5.0 innings of work.
The Commodores allowed four home runs as a pitching staff, leading to a gap it could not close over the course of nine innings. But the team did hit two home runs of their own, bringing their season total up to 89. Through 43 games, their 2.07 home runs per game is higher than their record-setting 2019 campaign when they hit 100 home runs in 71 games en route to a national championship.
Korbin Reynolds and Mike Mancini led the way offensively, notching Vanderbilt’s two home runs together in the seventh inning. The Commodores loaded the bases after the two home runs in the seventh but failed to drive in any more runs.
“It could have become very interesting if we put the ball in play when the bases were loaded there at the end, but we didn’t,” head coach Tim Corbin said after the game.
