Summer is now in full swing at Taco Mama, with the watermelon margarita taking center stage. To help beat the heat, I spent a Saturday night sipping the new seasonal drink alongside dinner and a selection of chips and dip.
If you’re like me, you spend months waiting for the coveted seasonal margaritas to make their way back to the menu. After enjoying the blood orange margarita during the winter months, I was excited for the opportunity to try out the watermelon flavor this summer. I opted for a sugar rim to accompany my slice of lime, but you have your choice of salt or a house-blend spicy rim as well.
Made with muddled-to-order watermelon that is cut fresh three times daily, the seasonal drink was refreshing and light after walking in the heat. The light, fruity flavor pairs extremely well with the lime juice, creating a subtly sweet and crisp summer drink. According to Will Haver, the founder of Taco Mama, this drink remains seasonal to ensure that the flavor is always top-notch.
“While we could technically offer this [drink] year-round if we weren’t concerned with inconsistency, we limit it to the peak summer months because we’ve found it is the only period we can guarantee prime quality watermelons,” Haver said.
In addition to my drink, I had to get my go-to dinner order: two steak tacos with all of my favorite toppings. While Taco Mama has a surplus of fresh topping options, make sure to include the chorizo refried beans in your order – I promise you won’t be disappointed. With a side of chips and guacamole to share with a friend, I walked home satisfied and ready to head back for more.
Whether you’re in town for the summer or planning how you will spend those first few nights back on campus in August, Taco Mama’s new seasonal offering is a must. If you’re not quite old enough to enjoy the wide array of margaritas on the menu, an order of tacos or sharing some chips and dip with friends is definitely worth the trip!
