An AlertVU message notified the Vanderbilt community of the presence of shooting victims at the Engineering and Science Building at 4:17 p.m. CDT today. The alert said police were responding and clarified that the “shooting incident did not occur on Vanderbilt Campus.”
A second message at 4:29 p.m. CDT revealed that VUPD was on scene with a “vehicle” that had been involved in the shooting and that the victims had been transported to VUMC. Nashville 311, an independent X account that reports MNPD dispatch calls, reported a shooting at Candlewood Apartment Homes — at 530 Harding Place — at 4 p.m. CDT.
A final message sent at 5:49 p.m. CDT notified the Vanderbilt community that the victims of the shooting had been driving to VUMC “seeking medical treatment,” and that none of the victims were affiliated with Vanderbilt.
WKRN News 2 reported that two people transported themselves to VUMC following the shooting and that both suffered “serious injuries to the face and shoulders,” although MNPD confirmed that neither faced life-threatening conditions.
Senior Louise Fraser said she saw the vehicle that VUPD had referred to in the AlertVU message while walking by the Wond’ry.
“We walked by the car in front of the Wond’ry — there were lots of bullets in the windshield,” Fraser said. “I was shocked to see it.”
A representative from the university said they had no additional information to share regarding this incident.
