Vanderbilt football schedule update: Tennessee rescheduled for Dec. 12, Georgia postponed to Dec. 19

On Friday, the Southeastern Conference announced schedule changes for Vanderbilt football’s final two regular season games.

According to a university press release, the Vanderbilt football team will not travel to Athens, Georgia this weekend to take on the eighth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs.

Per the university release, the team is struggling to meet the minimum number of 53 scholarship players due to issues surrounding COVID-19, injuries and opt-outs.

“Due to the Vanderbilt football squad size and position availability falling below roster minimum requirements, Saturday’s game at Georgia has been postponed to Dec. 19, consistent with Southeastern Conference COVID-19 protocols,” the release stated. “The lack of available players stems from circumstances surrounding COVID-19, injuries and opt-outs.”

The Commodores will tentatively plan to travel to Athens for a contest on Dec. 19, but in the event that Georgia qualifies for the Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship game slated to happen on that same day, this game would be cancelled and “declared a no-contest.”

This marks the third cancellation of the season for Vanderbilt following the postponement of their Oct. 17 matchup with Missouri and their Nov. 28 matchup with Tennessee.

In addition to postponing Vanderbilt’s contest with Georgia, the SEC also announced Friday that Vanderbilt’s matchup with in-state rival Tennessee will now be played on Dec. 12. Barring further setbacks, this would allow the Commodores to complete a full ten game regular season.
