Vanderbilt Athletics and athletic director Candice Lee officially announced that Vanderbilt Football head coach Clark Lea signed a contract extension on Nov. 28. It is expected to be a six-year extension, per Pete Nakos of On3. The announcement comes during Vanderbilt’s historic season, as the Commodores have reached nine wins in the regular season for the first time since 1915.
Lea’s contact was last extended in July of 2023, following Vanderbilt’s 5-7 record to end the 2022 season. This contract extended him through 2029, pushing his yearly salary to $3.7 million in 2025 — the lowest in the SEC.
There had been significant speculation that Lea was set to earn a contract extension, especially as the media painted him to be an option for other head coach vacancies in college football. With this extension, it all but ensures that Lea will be on West End for the foreseeable future.

The fifth-year head coach has led Vanderbilt to a historic season in 2025, knocking off five conference opponents — South Carolina, LSU, Missouri, Auburn and Kentucky — and four nonconference opponents to amass a 9-2 record. The Commodores are ranked firmly in the AP Top 25 at No. 12 and ranked No. 14 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
“I am excited to be able to continue the work we started at Vanderbilt five years ago. Throughout the process of working through this extension, I have been overwhelmed with two feelings,” Lea said. “First, a sense of pride in the culture and environment we have established at Vanderbilt. Second, a sense of clarity that the work is not complete. This next phase of the program build will introduce many exciting things, including facility upgrades and needed resources for our staff and team. These investments will go a long way in ensuring our program can level up. I am grateful to have leadership from Chancellor Diermeier and Vice Chancellor Lee, who clear the way for our success. Our vision has never been about one or two seasons, rather, it has always been about sustained success at a championship level. I am thrilled to be able to continue the mission, and I appreciate all the support from Commodore Nation and our Nashville community.”
The extension is expected to come with facility upgrades and a boost in salary for Lea.
Vanderbilt returns to action against the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, Nov. 29 in Neyland Stadium.
