Vanderbilt athletics announced Wednesday that it will permit a limited number of fans to attend home baseball games at Hawkins Field, starting with this weekend’s three-game series with Illinois-Chicago.

The university says the decision to limit—and subsequently expand—attendance at athletics events is informed by Vanderbilt public health partners and local public health officials.

Previously, Vanderbilt only admitted parents and families of student-athletes to attend home games. The decision to initially limit its attendance also noted that they would “continue to evaluate the opportunity to welcome season ticket holders and fans as soon as possible” based on the status of COVID-19.

Starting Friday, an unspecified number of tickets will be provided to fans, who will be seated in the infield stands. Vanderbilt plans to distribute the tickets through a lottery system, for which season ticket holders will receive an email from the university prior to that week’s games.

In addition to season ticket holders, the press release states that the athletic department is planning on permitting a “limited” number of students to attend, seated in the outfield stands.

“Vanderbilt will continue to evaluate the opportunity to welcome additional season ticket holders and fans as soon as possible at games, based on the evolving conditions of the pandemic,” the press release reads.
