An inside look at West End’s sweetest new addition: Parlor Doughnuts

After a long week of classes and late night study sessions, nothing cures my first week blues like a sweet treat. Located on West End, Parlor Doughnuts offers the most creative flavors imaginable, and we just had to try a few (for reporting’s sake, of course).

Walking up to the bakery, you’re greeted with the warm, familiar scent of homemade dough. If we’re talking history, parlors were living rooms where people gathered to share revolutionary ideas. With its large American flag and stars and eagles scattered throughout the shop, it exuded the patriotism that its name claims.

Courtesy of manager Isaac Alling, we secured a box of the most highly recommended doughnuts.

We dove into the (justifiably) fan-favorite: the French Toast doughnut. Light and fluffy like a croissant, it was artfully layered and slightly crisp on the outside (hence “French Toast”). Even with the sweet sugary coating, the bakers nailed the sweetness level, enabling me to happily finish every bite.

Up next: Raspberry Pistachio. Not to make you cringe, but this one was so moist. The raspberry flavor provided a tangy, fruity flavor and the pistachios sprinkled on top introduced a dull nutty undertone.

Before trying the final doughnut, Reese’s, we had our suspicions. Anything peanut-flavored can teeter on the edge of sickening, but this doughnut was just right, balancing the rich and creamy peanut butter and chocolate frosting with the light and airy doughnut interior. The peanut butter didn’t stick to the roof of my mouth, which allowed me to take bite after bite without the need for some water.

Although not the sugary sweet we hoped for, Parlor Doughnuts also serves coffee for those who believe doughnuts go best with a side of caffeine. (Hustler Staff/Marissa Tessier)

To top off our doughnut tasting, we opted for an iced caramel latte. I love anything sweet, but, unfortunately, this coffee couldn’t satisfy my sweet tooth. If you’re really into the taste of coffee, this one’s for you. But for me, it lacked the caramel flavor that the name would suggest. I’ll stick to their doughnuts next time.

From sweet, to salty, to chocolatey to cakey, Parlor Doughnuts has you covered no matter what flavors you love. They even serve vegan, gluten-free and keto doughnuts if you have any dietary restrictions. Prices range from $2.75, if you buy one to three doughnuts, to $2, if you buy more than 12. Let’s just say I plan on being economical.
