As autumn approaches and the semester unfolds, it’s easy for students to get lost in the pressures of keeping up with their various classes and clubs. For those of us who don’t have time to enjoy the cool weather and fall foliage, it can be difficult to fully appreciate the beauty of the changing seasons.
There is, however, a great alternative to experiencing the coziness of autumn without sacrificing precious study time: a pumpkin spice latte to sip on while you work. But which is the best and most convenient latte to grab on your way to the library? That’s where I come in to help.
I visited five coffee shops within walking distance of Vanderbilt’s campus to create a definitive list of the best and most convenient pumpkin drinks.
5) Dunkin’ Donuts
Starting off at the bottom of the list, Dunkin’s pumpkin spice latte simply lacks the crisp and cozy flavor that a good fall drink needs. While drinking it, I found myself double checking the label to make sure that there was indeed pumpkin in the drink. It isn’t easy to differentiate between their seasonal pumpkin spice latte and a regular vanilla latte. Additionally, the drink was very sweet, having little to no coffee flavor. Paired with a pumpkin donut, it can suffice, but it’s safe to say that there are several more promising options nearby.
4) 8th and Roast
Located slightly further from Main campus, 8th and Roast offers a variety of seasonal drinks. I tested out the Pumpkin Pie Latte, and while the coffee taste was solid, it follows Dunkin’s footsteps in terms of lacking a definitive pumpkin flavor. The cafe’s distance from Main campus also lowers it on the list, as it isn’t a place that many could conveniently swing by on their way to class. If you need a new coffee shop, this isn’t a bad option, but I wouldn’t recommend making the trek if you’re solely in search of a pumpkin flavored drink.
3) Starbucks
Starbucks’ fall menu has become quite a sensation. From the highly anticipated release date to the sweet, rich flavor of their pumpkin cream cold foam, they continue to set the standard for fall drinks and flavors. Compared to the other drinks on this list, their pumpkin spice latte is a solid middle ground. In terms of convenience and efficiency, the Starbucks located near campus is always crowded, so I’d recommend placing a mobile order if you’re in a hurry. As for the taste, it’s what many would consider a basic pumpkin spice latte. There’s a hint of spice to it that cannot be found in a regular coffee, but it can become somewhat overbearing after a few sips if you aren’t a fan of extremely sweet drinks.
2) Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii
Coming in second, the pumpkin spice latte at Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii in Hillsboro Village was a pleasant surprise. The coffee and pumpkin flavors are well balanced, keeping a consistent flavor of spice throughout while also avoiding being too sweet, a problem that two of the previous lattes struggle with. The flavor puts up a fight for first place, but the shop’s distance makes it slightly less worth it than the number one choice. While it isn’t necessarily far from Commons, it is definitely out of the way for those on Main Campus. It may be a perfect weekend treat but not the most delicious and convenient option out there.
1) Suzie’s
For the number one pumpkin spice latte, Vanderbilt’s very own Suzie’s Cafe takes the cake. From the very first sip, there is an undertone of pumpkin spice that remains steady throughout the entire drink. They perfectly balance the sweetness of the pumpkin with the bitterness of the coffee, truly encapsulating the feeling of fall. Not to mention, Suzie’s Cafe is conveniently located on campus, just a short walk from many academic buildings.
No matter what your regular coffee order is, these festive fall drinks offer a great way to embrace the season. Be sure to try them before they disappear!
