Following victories over Xavier and Clemson in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, No. 14 Vanderbilt Women’s Tennis traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes in the Super Regional round.
The Scarlet and Gray (26-4) bested the ’Dores (22-10) 4-1 in the match Saturday, May 9, at the Auer Tennis Complex.
“First off, congratulations to Ohio State on the win today and advancing,” head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said after the match. “They played a great match and competed very well. It was a tough day for our squad, and obviously not the result we were hoping for, but I’m so proud of the season that this team put together, culminating in a Sweet 16 finish.”
The Buckeyes opened up with a doubles win on Court No. 3 as Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev defeated Erin Pearce and Mia Yamakita 6-1. Then, the No. 23 duo of Flora Johnson and Luciana Perry closed out Vandy’s No. 7 Celia Belle-Mohr and Sophia Webster 6-3.
Vanderbilt took early leads on five of six singles courts, but Ohio State fought back and maintained its momentum from doubles. The home team earned another point when Nao Nashino took down Yamakita 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Webster got the Commodores their first victory of the match as she defeated Hephzibah Oluwadare 7-5, 6-4. However, Cisse-Ignatiev finished off Valeria Ray 7-6 (2), 6-1 shortly after to take a 3-1 Buckeye lead.
The Black and Gold’s season ended on Court No. 1, where No. 5-ranked individual Teah Chavez took down Mohr 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
This marked Mohr’s final appearance for Vanderbilt, and she will go down as one of the greatest players in program history. The graduate, along with Webster, became the first NCAA doubles finalists in program history in November.
This spring, Vanderbilt won 22 dual matches, the most since Tsoubanos took over the program. He and the ’Dores will look to build off of their momentum in Fall 2026 when they resume play.
