No. 11 Vanderbilt Men’s Golf traveled to St. Simons Island, Georgia, for the 2026 SEC Men’s Golf Championship April 22-26. Despite being a ranked team in the field, the Commodores struggled mightily and finished the week in 14th place, failing to be a top eight team to make it to match play.
The outing was played on the par-70 7,005-yard Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club, where it has been held since 2001.
Starting for Vanderbilt were Wells Williams, Jon Ed Steed, Chase Nevins, Ryan Downes and Will Hartman, with Michael Riebe traveling as a substitute.
“This is certainly one of the best weeks of the year, and our conference is as strong as it’s ever been this year,” head coach Scott Limbaugh said before the tournament.
The Commodores did not get off to a great start, though, shooting just 2-under 278 to finish the first day in 13th place. Williams, the No. 22 amateur golfer in the world, had a great individual day, though. The West Point, Mississippi, native set the Vanderbilt program record for lowest score at Sea Island with a 6-under 64. His round was not only bogey-free but also included an eagle on the 15th hole.
His teammates struggled, however. Hartman was the only other ’Dore in red figures, shooting 1-under, while Nevins and Steed shot 2-over and 3-over, respectively.
“I’m certainly ecstatic for Wells [Williams] to get us off to a great start with a 64 in the first round,” Limbaugh said after the round. “Honestly, he was in control all day. He played awesome, and I’m super proud of that. He has been about as consistent as a young man as I’ve coached.”
The team had a better performance in the second round, carding a 9-under 271 as a group. Williams and Hartman shot 3-under apiece, and Steed and Nevins both broke par as well. Downes, however, struggled, shooting a 2-over 72 after his 74 the day before.
The Commodores would need to overcome a two-stroke deficit to make the cut line to the match play round.
“I’m super proud of our boys today,” Limbaugh said after the second day of the tournament. “After we didn’t finish the way we wanted to on our back nine yesterday, the boys really hung in there today to give us this opportunity tomorrow. That’s really what you want, an opportunity on the final day of stroke play. They were tough out there, and that’s what we’ve talked about. Courage is contagious, and our guys were courageous on our back nine today. I’m thrilled with them for that.”
The final day could not have gone worse for Limbaugh’s squad, though. All five starters were above par, with Steed and Nevins shooting 73s and Hartman and Williams shooting 74s. Riebe, who subbed in for Downes, also posted a round of 4-over.
Having needed a round of 2-under or better to qualify for match play, the Commodores shot 14-over 294 as a group to end the tournament.
“It hurts right now, and I hate it for our guys,” Limbaugh said. “It’s good for our guys to have those feels and to be in contention with nine holes to go. Obviously, we didn’t handle it well today, and we have to learn from it and take ownership of it. There are no excuses, and we have to own it and get stronger because of it.”
It was not all bad news for the Black and Gold, though. Williams, who finished the week in 17th place with a 5-under score in three days, was awarded the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year award at the tournament’s conclusion — his second time winning the award in as many years.
Auburn’s Jackson Koivun ended up winning his third-straight SEC Individual Championship at 19-under on the week — with second place finishing a whopping seven strokes behind. Ole Miss won the match play bracket to be crowned the 2026 SEC Men’s Golf Team champions.
The Commodores will now wait to find out which NCAA Regional event they will attend. The NCAA Men’s Golf Selection Show will take place May 6 from 1-2 p.m. CDT and will air on NBC’s Golf Channel.
