Original Cast, also known as OC, is a musical theater troupe on campus. Members of the group work together to produce and perform a unique show once every semester. This semester’s show will allow you to relive something all Vanderbilt students can relate to: the first-year experience. The Huster had the opportunity to go behind the scenes with OC for their final rehearsal before tech week for their upcoming show, “Here’s Where You Belong.”
As a student-run group, OC cast members collaborate with each other when choreographing songs; these are referred to as numbers. This choreography often involves multiple position changes and synchronized dance movements in which cast members must rely on audio cues (or each other!) while performing.
During rehearsal, cast members not in the currently practiced number were soon observing and providing support as needed. This support included dialogue leading up to a song or background vocal support during a song. Laughter and smiles in between numbers were not uncommon as cast members worked to encompass the good, bad, and ugly parts of freshman year.
OC cast members perform everything from solos to full group numbers, with everyone featuring in multiple songs. All of the songs rehearsed are covers of iconic songs. These songs are selected from a variety of eras and encompass a range of emotions but all center around one theme. For this semester’s show, that theme is belonging.
Tickets for “Here’s Where You Belong” are available starting at 10 a.m. CDT March 23 with performances at 7 p.m. CDT Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28.
