Vanderbilt slugger Riley Nelson was selected by the Guardians in the fifth round of the 2025 MLB draft, becoming the fourth Commodore to be selected this year.
The Toronto native took an unconventional path to Vanderbilt, playing two seasons of community college baseball at Western Texas and Yavapai in 2023 and 2024, respectively. His standout 2024 campaign at Yavapai — highlighted by his first-team all-conference and all-region honors — earned him a spot on Tim Corbin’s roster last fall.
Nelson left his mark on West End in just one season with the team, emerging as the Commodores’ most consistent offensive presence throughout the 2025 season. In 60 games, the lefty slashed .344/.450/.526 with 8 home runs and 47 RBIs in the middle of Vanderbilt’s batting order. Nelson’s ability to hit for average and get on base against top tier SEC pitching helped elevate his draft stock across the spring.
A solid defender, Nelson will most likely stick at first base as he enters the Guardians farm system. That said, concerns over his defensive versatility and long-term power projection at first base could slow his progression through the minor leagues.
Still, with a hard-working mentality and proven track record of offensive success at every level, Nelson gives the Guardians a polished hitter to look forward to in the future if he chooses to sign.
Nelson will have to choose whether to go to the minor leagues or return to Vanderbilt by Monday, July 28th, at 5 p.m. ET — the deadline for drafted rookies to sign their contracts.
