Last spring, a coffee shop with a mission opened on West End Ave. Paradeisos Coffee Company, just a five-minute walk from the Vanderbilt Bookstore, aims to provide opportunity and relief for Nashville’s homeless population.
The coffee shop, named after the Greek word for “paradise,” seeks to create low-barrier job opportunities for those who are currently unhoused. Paradeisos Coffee is owned by People Loving Nashville, a nonprofit that has served Nashville’s homeless population for 16 years. Per their website, the shop embodies PLN’s mission of providing relief and community for the unhoused and vulnerable, “one cup at a time.” Joey Godinho, Director of Restoration for PLN and general manager of Paradeisos, spoke with The Hustler about the coffee shop’s philanthropic initiative.
“Paradeisos is about encouraging [the mentality] that anyone who walks through this door is met with love and dignity,” Godinho said.
He told the story of Paradeisos employee Dragon, who was previously unhoused. Since starting at Paradeisos, Dragon has worked two jobs, found housing and bought a car.Paradeisos, however, is more than just an employer; its mission involves building relationships with its employees.
“Dragon is now one of my good friends,” Godinho said. “Success is measured by the individual, and he’s flourishing and happy.”
Paradeisos has created a community of individuals from diverse backgrounds united by the goal of fostering a supportive environment that uplifts those experiencing homelessness. In reaching that goal, they are “finding paradise.” According to Godinho, the shop’s greatest strength lies in the passion people have for its cause.
“If you believe in your mission more than your product, the people will come alongside that,” Godinho said.
The largest challenge Paradeisos faces is the hesitancy some people feel about engaging with Nashville’s homeless population. The coffee shop is working to overcome these stigmas, emphasizing open minds and hearts.
“I would encourage people to come in and engage in the community we have here. Buy a cup of coffee and change someone’s life,” Godinho said.
For many Vanderbilt students, Nashville has become a second home. By engaging with nonprofits like Paradeisos, they can go beyond the Vanderbilt bubble and support the greater community.
When I visited Paradeisos, the coffee shop was buzzing with customers engaged in conversations, working and enjoying their lattes. As a busy college student, it’s sometimes hard to get out into the community and find a way to make a difference. Paradeisos Coffee offers the perfect opportunity to support a good cause with its convenient location and welcoming atmosphere.
