The organizers of Lights on the Lawn canceled this year’s show. Previously scheduled to take place Sept. 27, LOTL is a philanthropic concert held annually at Vanderbilt to support the Mary Parrish Center. The center offers housing and services to survivors of interpersonal violence.
The LOTL team contacted ticket purchasers through an email from Sarratt Box Office. The email included a refund form but encouraged continued support for the event’s charitable cause. LOTL has raised over $749 thousand for the Mary Parrish Center since the concert’s inception in 2012.
“After receiving meteorological updates on Friday’s anticipated wind speeds and flooding hazards, we are devastated to announce that it would be unsafe to proceed with tomorrow’s show,” a LOTL Instagram post read.
Sophomore Melinda Pan shared her disappointment about the cancellation.
“It’s understandable that they canceled Lights on the Lawn, but they could’ve rescheduled it to a different time,” Pan said. “It would have been nice to end the week with [the concert].”
Sophomore Aimee Permpoonwiwat also expressed that the concert could’ve been rescheduled.
“Lights on the Lawn is one of Vanderbilt’s iconic events that highlight the magic of Music City, so it’s a shame that it had to be canceled,” Permpoonwiwat said. “Safety has to come first of course, but it would be great if the event could be rescheduled.”
Sophomore Charlyne Dong acknowledged the hazards that led to the event’s cancellation.
“I think it’s reasonable that the rain may cause safety concerns,” Dong said.
LOTL organizers concluded their social media statement by wishing the community safety and promising to return next year with their highly anticipated event.
