Vanderbilt football has reportedly hired Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Jesse Minter as its defensive coordinator, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Pete Thamel.

Minter would replace Ted Roof, who just finished his first season as defensive coordinator.

Minter comes off his fourth season with the Ravens and his first as defensive backs coach. He contributed to a unit that in 2020 ranked sixth in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (221.0), seventh in total yards allowed per game (329.8) and 17th in takeaways (22). Prior to his promotion, he served as a defensive quality control assistant, where he worked with three Pro Bowl defenders in cornerbacks Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Peters and safety Earl Thomas.

Before moving up to the NFL, Minter coached for 11 years at the collegiate level, most recently as Georgia State’s defensive coordinator from 2013-2016. In 2015, Georgia State boasted the most improved defense in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), allowing 15 points and 122.3 yards fewer per game than in 2014.

Minter, a 2015 Broyles Award nominee, came to Georgia State after a four-year tenure at Indiana State, where he served as defensive coordinator for two years. His final season at Indiana State saw the Sycamores’ defense finish third in the FCS in scoring defense for the 2012 season, allowing just 14.3 points per game, and sixth nationally in total defense at 296.4 yards per game. Minter had brief stints as a football intern at Notre Dame in 2006 and a graduate assistant at Cincinnati from 2007-2008.
