André L. Churchwell has been named interim Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, according to a June 14 press release.
Churchwell is currently Chief Diversity Officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Senior Associate Dean for Diversity Affairs in the School of Medicine. He will maintain these roles while serving as interim Vice Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer, the press release said. Churchwell succeeds James Page, who came into the role last fall and whose term ended June 7.
The Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion seeks to “foster institutional equity, diversity and inclusion by creating educational opportunities, raising awareness and providing strategies and tools to bring to life the vision of inclusive excellence, both on our campus and in our city,” the Office’s mission statement says.
Churchwell graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelors of science degree in biomedical engineering in 1975 before attending medical school at Harvard University. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in cardiology at Emory University.
