No. 10 Vanderbilt faced No. 19 Florida on its home court on Saturday, Jan. 17 — the second ranked matchup at Memorial Gymnasium in a week’s time. Following a short turnaround from their 80-64 loss at Texas, on Wednesday, the Commodores played an incredibly close game but fell just short against the Gators.
The stadium was packed to the brim, as the Vanderbilt student section was raucous and disruptive for the entire game. The stands, though, were spotted with the bright blue and orange of the Gators, whose fans were also lively throughout the afternoon.
Both teams sent out their usual starting lineups, as Duke Miles, Tyler Tanner, Tyler Nickel, AK Okereke and Devin McGlockton got the nod from Vanderbilt head coach Mark Byington. Florida’s Todd Golden sent out Boogie Fland, Xaivian Lee, Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu. Due to equipment troubles, Florida’s backcourt of Lee and Fland wore nameless No. 99 and No. 33 jerseys, respectively.
Florida out-rebounded the Commodores 40-26, which consistently contributed to second-chance points and free throw opportunities, giving them a slight edge down the line. Chinyelu lit up the stat sheet, scoring 20 points and 10 boards on 77% shooting, while Tanner led Vanderbilt with 20 of his own.
Vanderbilt struggled early on, especially guarding Condon, who had 12 points in the first half. The ‘Dores fell down double digits early in the game, but clawed back by forcing turnovers and finding a rhythm in the pick-and-roll game. The second half was a more physical, back-and-forth affair that could have gone either way. The difference in the game was a few key plays down the stretch.
“I loved the way we competed,” Byington said in his postgame press conference. “Sometimes games just come down to minute, little things, and we will try to fix some [of those] things and move on.”
First half
Before the game’s tipoff, the Memorial crowd was on its feet and screaming — as the National Anthem concluded, they emphatically welcomed the visiting Gator fans to the “home of the ‘Dores.” The ball was tipped in favor of Vanderbilt, and the Commodores then struck on their first possession with a deep wing 3-pointer from Okereke.
Florida responded quickly, though, with a layup from Condon. On the Gators’ second offensive possession, Okereke blocked a floater attempt from Fland as the shot clock expired.
It was hard early on for Vanderbilt to get rebounds over the 6’11 Condon, though, as after a dunk attempt of his was blocked by Nickel, he quickly followed it up with a put-back slam. A quick sequence saw Nickel hit a fadeaway jumper in the post, and Tanner stealing the following inbound pass, only to be ended by Miles missing an open jumper.
The game was squared up at 8-8 during the first media timeout at the 15:48 tick, and Okereke knocked down two free throws afterwards to reclaim the lead for Vanderbilt.
Fland and Vanderbilt forward Tyler Harris traded mid-range jumpers before Condon hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Okereke once again attacked Florida’s 2-3 zone defense and drew a foul on a dunk attempt before hitting two foul shots for an early seven points. The games’ symmetry continued as Condon and Tanner blocked layups on each end of the court, with Tanner then taking it coast-to-coast and getting fouled on a made layup before successfully converting the and one play to go up 17-13.
Florida then went on a 10-0 run that included a banked-in floater from Lee and an and one layup from Haugh, as the Commodores missed four straight field goals before a media timeout at 11:03.
Commodore fan-favorite Mike James entered the game to roars from the crowd, which were quickly silenced by a deep ball from Lee, who hit another a few possessions later. The Gators’ lead reached double digits as Condon made a hook shot over Jalen Washington, and they controlled the game 32-22 with 7:58 left in the half. To this point, Florida out-rebounded its opponents by an astounding margin 17-6 margin.
A three-second violation by Chinyelu re-energized the home crowd, flowing into a dunk by Washington. Moments later, Miles made an insanely difficult pull-up jumper on the baseline before Condon missed the hoop entirely on an open 3-ball, and the student section would call him “airball” for the rest of the day.
Miles hit his first 3-pointer of the day in transition, but was matched quickly by Fland. A Tanner layup cut the deficit to 34-31 before McGlockton fouled Isiah Brown to send the game to a media timeout at 3:54.
Country music superstar Shaboozey was sitting front row and shown on the jumbotron during the break, which excited everyone in the building.
Both teams traded baskets before Miles found an open Harris on a skip pass for a huge 3-point make for Vanderbilt. The on-and-off trend continued as Brown had an incredible one-handed putback dunk off a Fland miss.
Tanner, who scored 15 points in the first half, then went on a 5-0 run himself with a long ball and transition layup to give Vanderbilt a 41-40 lead, forcing Golden to call a timeout with 1:36 left in the half. The period ended with Washington making a fadeaway in the post as time expired, with the score being 45-44 in favor of the home team.

Second half
Following a halftime show by performing artist Gareth, the pace of the game slowed down a bit. Florida opened its offense with a terrible out-of-bounds pass by Haugh, but soon retook the lead after Chinyelu made four consecutive free throws after a McGlockton flagrant foul ruling that confused the crowd.
“Airball” chants from the crowd continued to fluster Condon, who picked up a flagrant of his own after pushing off Nickel on a drive. Florida had five team fouls within four minutes of play, matching its total from the entire first half — a result of the game becoming more physical down the stretch. Vanderbilt had six early fouls too, and Chinyelu made two more free throws to go up 55-51 before a media timeout at the 15:54 mark.
Chinyelu continued to make an impact by sending a Tanner layup attempt to the other side of the court, leading to a transition 3-ball by Urban Klavzar. A few moments later, the officials called out-of-bounds on Washington after rebounding a missed free throw, which was overturned after a challenge by Byington.
McGlockton made an open look from the top of the arc after a screen, and Washington posterized two Gators on a drive to tie the game at 60 apiece. Miles then drew a charge off of Chinyelu to put Vanderbilt in the bonus for the remainder of the game.
Fans exploded when Miles found Nickel open in the corner for a bucket, making the score 67-67. Okereke and Washington both picked up fouls and took care of business at the charity stripe, as the Commodores made their first 18 free throws of the day.
Golden called a timeout at the 8:40 mark, after a jumper by Brown put his squad up 74-73. Vanderbilt then quickly passed through a Florida press to find Washington open for a layup. Despite Washington missing two free throws moments later, Okereke got the board and Miles drove to the hoop for an electric lefty finish.
While the Commodores’ scoring was consistent, Florida had back-to-back converted and ones, and went up by five points with five minutes left, but Tanner soon hit a contested step-back 3-pointer to make it a one-possession game at the 4:01 media timeout. Miles, however, fouled out of the game with 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Vanderbilt tied the game up with two free throws by Harris, and the crowd reached its maximum volume as Condon subsequently missed a layup. Nickel then hit a baseline pull-up to take the lead, which was matched by a Chienyelu elbow jumper before the Gators called a timeout with 1:37 remaining.
The Commodores played a pass-heavy possession that ended in a McGlockton made shot, but Lee retook the lead with a very deep ball the next play. Okereke subsequently turned the ball over, giving it back to Florida down one with 19 seconds remaining.
Lee was instantly fouled and made one of two free throws. Tanner then went down the floor and missed a potential game-tying layup, though, and Okereke quickly fouled Condon on the rebound. The junior made both of his foul shots to go up by four points and seal the game for the Gators.
Vanderbilt will now travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to take on the No. 17 Razorbacks on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. CST.
