The university sent an email to the Vanderbilt community at 5:11 p.m. CST on Jan. 9 announcing that Jan. 10 will act as an “administrative leave day,” with all in-person, on-campus classes being canceled. To accommodate the inclement weather, Campus Dining announced changes to their operating hours, including continuous service in Rand Dining Hall from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST while Zeppos Dining Hall, Commodore Pizza Kitchen, The Pub, Local Java and the Branscomb Munchie will be closed.
At 2 p.m. CST on Jan. 9, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency declared a state of emergency across the state ahead of the expected snow storm. TEMA reported that areas in Middle Tennessee could see anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow accumulation.
In the email, the university urged community members to use caution when navigating campus and said that staff with “critical on-site job functions” should plan to show up to work if they are able to do so.
“The university plans to return to regular campus operations, including classes, on Monday, Jan. 13,” the email reads. “Any changes to plans for Monday will be communicated by 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12.”
All Suzies locations will be closed on Friday, except for Central Library which will open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST. All other Campus Dining locations will operate as normal.
Katherine Kim, a senior, said she was “thrilled” to hear that classes were canceled.
“This day off was a wonderful surprise and I feel much needed after the chaos of the first week of classes,” Kim said in a message to The Hustler. “I love snow!”
