On Saturday night, American singer-songwriter BabyJake took the stage at Nashville’s historic music forum, Exit/In, delivering a captivating performance that showcased how far he has come as both an artist and individual. Since leaving his Los Angeles-roots behind and moving to Music City three years ago, BabyJake has developed his unique alternative genre of music, blending diverse influences of pop, hip hop and indie rock into a bold sound, with lyrics reflecting his journey of self-discovery. BabyJake’s dynamic stage presence enraptured the Nashville crowd and filled the evening with undeniable energy.
Prior to the Saturday-night show, Jake Herring, known musically as BabyJake, sat down for an interview with The Hustler. During the conversation, he spoke passionately about his song-writing process, sources of inspiration and overcoming creative blocks.
“I haven’t had a creative block in years. [I find that] inspiration is bull—-. Blocks are just your own brain getting in the way of yourself,” Herring explained.
When speaking about the music industry, Herring emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself, despite constraints and societal expectations, describing himself as an “anti-follow[er of] the rules.” His artistic approach reflects the genuineness felt when listening to his diverse range of music, with each song expressing his raw emotions.
“Cigarettes On Patios,” BabyJake’s breakout hit, marked the beginning of his rise in the music industry. As he jumped onto the stage at Exit/In to sing the song, many in the crowd erupted, singing every word of the song with excitement. The track captured his youthful perspective at the time — a carefree celebration of living in the moment. Though his outlook on life has evolved since its release, he told us he wouldn’t change a single thing about the track because he viewed it as a snapshot of who he was and where he started.
“I go in and I f—ing work hard, and I love what I do,” Herring said in the interview. “You shouldn’t abuse what this [music, success and fans] is. I’m lucky to be here in the first place.”
When speaking about his new album, “Beautiful Blue Collar Boy” — a name that fits his shift toward a more alternative sound — Herring spoke with excitement and emotion. For him, music isn’t just about fame; it’s about hard work, staying grounded and keeping it real with his audience and supporters.
After shows, he can be found at the merchandise table talking to fans for hours to build connections authentically. He sees music as hard work, but he said he feels lucky to be in this industry. That gratitude shines through in everything he does, including in his performance at the Exit/In.
Through his original music and social media platform, Herring strives to promote an easygoing mindset that encourages individuality and discourages comparison to others. As university students, there is often a desire for perfection, which leads us to measure ourselves against others. Herring’s message challenges this perspective.
“As soon as I have enough money to hire a social media manager, I’m ready to go off my socials because comparing yourself is the worst thing you can do in any aspect of your life,” Herring said.

From his breakout hit “Cigarettes On Patios” to songs on his new album “Beautiful Blue Collar Boy,” BabyJake reminded everyone that music is about connecting with people, not following rules. From having an energetic performance, to signing merch, taking photos and speaking to his fans for hours, we eagerly await what’s next for this authentic artist with a beautiful blue-collar heart.
