Vanderbilt right-handed pitcher Thomas Schultz was selected in the ninth round by the Washington Nationals in the 2023 MLB Draft. Schultz spent four seasons for the Commodores and ended his collegiate baseball career with a 10-7 record as a starter.
“Thomas is a very steady kid,” head coach Tim Corbin said. “Thomas is one of the best athletes on the team and continues to build on his strength in the weight room. He is a consistent, reliable and likable young man. I appreciate him very much.”
Before the 2023 season, Schultz was listed as a preseason All-American. The 6’6’’ pitcher had a strong showing in his senior season, recording a 4.05 ERA in 33.1 innings pitches. He also notched 37 strikeouts.
Being drafted in the ninth round will be used as motivation for Schultz. He has always been overlooked, even since high school. He was the 146th-ranked right-handed pitcher in the Class of 2019.
He’ll hope to bring his tenacity and athleticism to the Washington Nationals farm system.
