Vanderbilt outfielder RJ Schreck was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the No. 227 pick in the 2023 MLB draft. Schreck marks the sixth Commodore selected in this year’s draft, joining fellow outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr. along with pitchers Hunter Owen, Nick Maldonado, Patrick Reilly and Thomas Schultz.
Schreck, a graduate transfer, spent the first four years of his collegiate career with Duke University. During his time in Durham, Schreck batted .288, hitting 26 homers and driving in 94 runs. It wasn’t until after his fourth year at Duke, when he committed to play for head coach Tim Corbin and the Vanderbilt Commodores, that he elevated his game to a different level.
The Los Angeles native slashed.306/.454/.588 during his single season with the Black and Gold, crushing 14 home runs while setting a new career-high in RBIs with 59. Schreck was one of the team’s most consistent hitters all season, leading the Commodore offense through cold stretches and hot streaks. The right-fielder was the exact player the Commodores needed and played a significant role in leading the team to an SEC Tournament Championship and a No. 5 national seed.
Now, Schreck will head northwest to join the Seattle farm system and look to work his way up the ranks through the coming years.
