Vanderbilt football has hired Joey Lynch as its quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, according to reports from Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel.

Lynch would replace Todd Fitch as quarterbacks coach. Fitch also served as Vanderbilt’s offensive coordinator last season.

Lynch spent one season at Colorado State as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Rams only played four games in 2020 and averaged 22.2 points per game.

Prior to his short stint at Colorado State, Lynch coached at his alma mater Ball State from 2008-2019. He served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2013-2018 before adding the assistant head coach title in 2019. In 2019, Lynch’s offense led the Mid-American Conference in scoring with 34.8 points per game and plays per game with 75.8. His fast-paced offense earned him a nomination for the Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant.

He also coached tight ends and wide receivers earlier in his Ball State coaching career, and he served as recruiting coordinator for four seasons.

Lynch got into coaching after finishing his playing career with Ball State in 2006. He was the offensive coordinator at Division II Saint Joseph’s in Indiana in 2007, and he was hired to the same position at Division II Ashland University the following year.

He is the third offensive assistant hire on head coach Clark Lea’s staff along with offensive coordinator David Raih and running backs coach Norval McKenzie.
