No. 39 Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis squared off for a pair of dual matches against No. 43 South Carolina and No. 28 Pepperdine. Head coach Scott Brown’s unit faltered, dropping both contests to fall to 8-7 on the year.
3/6 vs. South Carolina (home)
Vanderbilt’s SEC home opener began with a series of gritty doubles matches. Pablo Martinez Gomez and Danil Panarin worked to a 6-4 win over Atakan Kaharan and Jelani Sarr, but the Gamecocks’ No. 26 tandem of Lucas Andrade da Silva and Connor Thomson answered with a 6-3 defeat of Nathan Cox and Michael Ross. Giuseppe Cerasuolo and Henry Ruger dug deep, defeating Sean Daryabeigi and Casey Hoole in a 7-5 contest to secure the doubles point for the Black and Gold.
In singles play, Cox earned a quick 6-2, 6-3 victory over da Silva, avenging his loss in doubles. No. 57 Thomson responded with a 7-5, 6-0 rout of Ross, and No. 79 Daryabeigi followed suit with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Martinez Gomez. With the match tied at two-apiece, South Carolina’s Hoole emerged victorious in a nail-biting 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 duel with Panarin, and Gabe Avram downed Dylan Charlap in a 6-3, 7-6 (3) matchup to clinch the win for the Gamecocks.
3/9 vs. Pepperdine (away)
The Commodores then traveled to the West Coast to battle the 28th-ranked Pepperdine Waves. Brown’s team suffered a rare defeat in doubles play, as No. 72 Linus Halldin and Maxi Homberg beat Martinez Gomez and Panarin 6-4, and Lasse Poertner and Aleksa Pisaric defeated Cerasuolo and Ruger in a 6-3 contest.
The Black and Gold did not fare much better in singles matches. David Fix made quick work of Hugo Coquelin in a 6-1, 6-4 outing, while No. 47 Homberg beat Panarin 6-3, 6-1. No. 69 Edward Winter then defeated Cox 6-2, 6-1, but Ruger answered with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Pisaric. The fifth-year’s win was the lone singles victory for the Commodores, and the day ended with Poertner’s 6-2, 6-1 win against Ross.
No. 39 Vanderbilt (8-7, 1-5 SEC) will return to Nashville for a conference matchup against No. 22 Mississippi State (13-3, 3-2 SEC) on Thursday, March 13.
