No. 14 Vanderbilt Men’s Golf continued its spring season by competing at the Cabo Collegiate at Twin Dolphin Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico from March 2–4. The Commodores’ 54-hole total of 21-over 873 was good enough to secure a ninth-place finish — their lowest of the season.
Vanderbilt’s efforts were led by All-American Jackson Van Paris, who posted a three-round score of 3-under 210, placing in a tie for eighth. In addition to Van Paris, Vanderbilt’s lineup consisted of Chase Nevins, Wells Williams, Gordon Sargent, John Broderick and Ryan Downes, who played as an individual.
On Day One, the Commodores posted a score of 12-over 296, which had them in 11th place. Van Paris led the way with a 1-under 70, fueled by birdies on holes 5, 8, 9, 10, 13 and 18. His efforts were backed by Williams’ even-par 71, while Broderick and Sargent carded rounds of 6-over 77 and 7-over 78, respectively.
On Day Two, Vanderbilt settled in and carded a combined score of 2-over 286, which put it in ninth place. Nevins led the charge with a stellar 3-under 68, highlighted by the five birdies over an eight-hole stretch. Building on his momentum from Day One, Van Paris backed his 1-under 70 with an even-par 71. Other notable performances included Broderick’s 2-over 73 and Sargent’s 3-over 74.
On the final day, Van Paris capped off his strong performance with a 2-under 69, building on his solid first two rounds, which was good enough for a top-10 finish. Van Paris’ excellent score was backed by Nevins’ 1-over 72, Williams’ 3-over 74 and Sargent’s 5-over 76. The Commodores’ efforts saw them card a cumulative score of a 7-over 271.
After the final round, head coach Scott Limbaugh gave an assessment of the Commodores’ spring season and the areas for improvement moving forward.
“We are over halfway through our spring season and there are only two more opportunities to compete and grow before championship season. Each player and coach has to know if they are making the team stronger and if not, we need to figure out what needs to change,” Limbaugh said. “We have to be excited to get in the dirt and get better at doing all the little things to our standards because we aren’t doing that consistently enough right now.”
The Commodores will look to capitalize on the second half of the spring season when they are back in action in Palm City, Florida, for the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on March 24-25.
