On Jan. 24, 26-year-old songwriter, singer and producer — Brent de la Cruz — sat down for a Zoom interview with The Hustler. Born and raised in San Diego, de la Cruz has gained traction for his innovative, alternative style of music and visually compelling music videos that evoke raw emotion.
De la Cruz didn’t grow up in a musical household but skateboarding and peer influences shaped his love for music. His journey began in middle school, as he explored beats and melodies that developed his distinct alternative sound — a blend of childhood favorites and modern experimentation.
“I didn’t learn to play the guitar for the first five years of making music,” de la Cruz said. “Now, the guitar is where I often begin the songwriting process.”
As his skill set expanded, so did his creative vision. Drawing inspiration from movies, his community and personal experiences, de la Cruz takes a hands-on approach when crafting his songs. From songwriting to directing and editing music videos, he believes in doing things himself to faithfully translate his ideas into art. His work aims to evoke the same indescribable emotions that great films and music leave behind.

With recent releases and projects inspired by travels, including to Japan, de la Cruz said he is excited to gain new perspectives and evolve his creative aspirations. His authenticity shines through as he continues to grow, balance trends and connect with fans through social media and live performances.
In November 2024, de la Cruz released the official music video to his song “Soft Words,” which conveys themes of emotional vulnerability and personal growth. During the interview, de la Cruz explained that he fully controls the creative process of each music video.
“I shoot videos alongside my childhood friend, Tyler Eastlick, and handle all the editing and post-production myself,” de la Cruz said. “It keeps me grounded.”
This authenticity is evident in the “Soft Words” music video where the powerful visuals capture de la Cruz’s connection to the song.
One of de la Cruz’s most recent projects, titled “Streets,” is a song about emotional scars and inner growth. De la Cruz’s melancholic lyrics and calming tone trigger a sincere and nostalgic feeling. The official lyric video, filmed and edited in a retro style, enhances the song’s emotional depth. With lyrics that explore themes of the growing pains of early adulthood, de la Cruz’s music resonates deeply with young adults navigating college life and the pressures of self-discovery. For Vanderbilt students balancing rigorous academics, future goals and a social life, his songs offer a relatable reflection of their journey.
