Vanderbilt Women’s Tennis hosted Murray State and Tennessee State on Feb. 14, winning five of six total doubles matches and all six combined completed singles matches. Similar to its doubleheader on Jan. 31, Vanderbilt continued to experiment with new doubles pairings across the two matches.
Vanderbilt’s excellent play began in doubles against Murray State and continued throughout the day. To begin, senior duo Célia-Belle Mohr and Amy Stevens bested the Racers’ Valeria Chaikovskaia and Bruna Melato 6-4. This was followed by Vanderbilt’s Valeria Ray and Trinetra Vijayakumar downing Yuna Kadowaki and Yu Kikawa 6-2. These two wins secured the doubles point for Vanderbilt, rendering Sonya Macavei and Bridget Stammel’s close 7-5 loss in the final doubles match to Varvara Alexeyeva and Barbora Hermanova inconsequential.
In singles, Vanderbilt impressed with three quick two-set victories to clinch the match. No. 84 Ray led the way with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Melato. No. 48 Mohr quickly followed up with a 6-0, 6-2 takedown against Chaikovskaia. Macavei then sealed the victory for Vanderbilt with a smooth 6-2, 6-1 win against Kadowaki. No Commodore was behind when play in the remaining three singles matches was halted after Vanderbilt clinched the match. Stammel in particular was right at the brink of victory with a 6-4, 5-0 lead over Alexeyeva.
Vanderbilt’s dominance carried into its match against Tennessee State later in the afternoon. In doubles play, all three Commodore teams soared to victory. Ray and Vijayakumar blanked the Tigers’ Aroa Arrieta Castillo and Jovana Nikolic 6-0. Macavei and Stammel then redeemed their earlier loss with a 6-1 win over Sydney Brantley and Louise Ratiu. To cap off the doubles sweep, Jayden Jagolinzer and Stevens picked up a 6-4 victory over Tennessee State’s Francisca Gomez-Weiss and Natalie Walsh.
Singles play was equally as strong for the Commodores. Stevens delivered the first singles win with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Castillo. This was followed by Macavei’s dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gomez-Weiss. Lastly, Ray completed the Commodores’ undefeated day in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Ratiu. Once again, no Commodore in the unfinished matches was losing when play was called.
Vanderbilt will look to carry this momentum into its match against Northwestern (4-4) at 4 p.m. CST on Feb. 21 in its final match before SEC play begins.
