All VUMC academic department and center websites were instructed to remove any references to diversity, equity and inclusion and associated phrases from their websites, per email correspondence to VUMC affiliates obtained by The Hustler. Additionally, Vanderbilt’s former Student Center for Social Justice and Identity has been renamed to the Student Center for Belonging and Communities.
These moves follow President Donald Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order calling for an end to “radical and wasteful government DEI programs and preferencing.”
Though VUMC is an independent non-profit, it has a contractual relationship with several government entities, therefore requiring it to comply with federal regulatory guidelines to maintain these subcontracts.
“Underpinning our work at VUMC is a commitment to fostering a welcoming environment, and that commitment remains steadfast. However, as our regulatory requirements change, so must our programs,” the Jan. 31 notice to VUMC affiliates reads.
Included in the now-banned language are the following words and phrases: DEI, DEIA, health equity, health disparity, health inequity, social drivers of health, social determinants of health, social justice, racial justice/equity, equal access to health care, unconscious bias, microaggression, climate change and environmental justice.
A student, granted anonymity for protection from retribution due to their current affiliation with VUMC, expressed regret that VUMC was not able to push back against the federal mandate but recognized the challenging circumstances given VUMC’s reliance on federal funding. Together, Vanderbilt and VUMC are among the top 30 institutions with the largest research and development expenditures, at over $1.08 billion in 2022, of which over 80% is federally funded.
“I wish Vanderbilt would take a bigger stance to support DEI since it’s a very important thing for universities to support, to make sure every member of their campus feels welcome,” the student said. “At the same time, I can understand where they’re coming from — a lot of Trump’s executive orders are making it hard for universities to remain supportive of DEI while still being able to receive federal funding, which is key for them to be able to continue operations.”
VUMC websites began going offline yesterday to ensure they, as well as its social media posts, are in compliance with federal requirements. VUMC declined The Hustler’s request for comment on the immediate and projected long-term implications of Trump’s executive orders.
The SCBC, formerly called the SCSJI, also revised its website. Its overall content remained relatively similar, though phrases like “inclusive engagement” changed to “engaged participation” in its mission statement, and those like “liberation, inclusion and social justice” were removed from its vision statement.
The university declined to comment on changes to the SCBC and referred The Hustler instead to university communication regarding changes to federal grants and funding.

Should the NBA have the same proportional racial representation as the country? So if it is ok for sports leagues to be unbalanced by merit, so too can doctors. I want my surgeon to be competent rather than being an unqualified quota filler.

Well said….and well reasoned….and true…and common sense, Thanks for your post

As an alum who had spent time at VUMC, I am so saddened to hear this. Why can’t Vanderbilt be the ones to fight this and not accept what Trump says. As these policies are new and may not have been tested in the courts, we should be at the cutting edge of the fight to get our country back. I have not given a lot of money to Vanderbilt because of the poor job we have done at attracting people of color to the undergraduate population. Now, with this decision, I am unhappy telling people I am a graduate. As our athletic teams are improving on the backs of many people of color, we are moving away from ways to support them. Shame on you VUMC.

Racism is racism & DEI by any name is the worst of that, using arbitrary categories to determine merit. This is contrary to Martin Luther King’s admonition in his speech in Washington DC, at the reflecting pool, challenging the country to hope for one day the country would focus on the “content of a person’s character, not on the color of their skin”. Pretty clear that use of DEI is contrary to the thrust, the reasoning, the spirit of that admonition. Class of ’70 (Perry Wallace’s class)

I imagine not complying with these policies would cost VUMC and its mission to lose significant (hundreds of millions) in funding. The federal government has historically helped academic institutions make headway is eradicating illnesses and disease – sometimes targeting specific populations when it’s disporportinately impacting that group.
No wonder they’re compying when this federal mandate….it completely impacts that work and upends careers for lifelong scientists.

I am shocked and ashamed of VU for giving in to the anti-DEI rantings of a clearly racist and evil Trump. As a graduate of the OGSM at VU, I am removing my diploma from my office wall.

Ashamed? Yes. Shocked? No.

Shame on you Vanderbilt for caving to this racist President

Vanderbilt should lose all of its federal funding because they are superficially complying with federal law. Name changes don’t mean anything if the personnel and goals of these orgs stay the same. Shame on Vandy. They should have their endowment’s taxed as well.

So my family and I have been going to VUMC for the past 30+ years, since I was 10 years old, long before DEI had its acronym. At that time, a physician appropriately diagnosed me with a condition that was more likely to impact members of my race and wasn’t afraid to have that conversation. Attention to concepts of DEI in medicine have played a critical part of us receiving appropriate, individualized and science-based care and research opportunities that would otherwise be inaccessible. We support this lifesaving care and research just like anyone else through our wallets and tax dollars. We deserve a chance at the same outcomes as everyone else. It is a sad day to see politics win over science and basic human dignity.

Great news! DEI is discrimination, exclusion, and indoctrination. Bring back merit to medicine!
Yvonne • Feb 5, 2025 at 9:00 pm CST
OK. Let’s remove Legacy admissions as well to help insure “merit”.
Vandy Patient #2 • Feb 6, 2025 at 9:56 am CST
Merit has ALWAYS been there in medicine. Don’t be fooled by politicians.
More importantly…keep the big government AWAY from medicine! We need fewer but actual beneficial regulations (those that bring prices down, for example) instead of this nonsense culture war.

It’s interesting how many up and down votes these comments receive. Presumably the undergraduates are incredible “woke.” As they grow older, they will better appreciate the importance of meritocracy. It does cause me to wonder, however, just how skewed Vandy’s admission policies have become over the years to prioritize immutable characteristics over true merit and capability to succeed. If it’s not careful, they will suffer the fate of Stanford, and companies will prefer to hire students from public universities. I believe Diermeier understands these points. The last thing I want is a cardiovascular surgeon cutting into me because of his ethnic identity instead of his skill set.
Freddy • Feb 13, 2025 at 5:32 pm CST
You obviously do not appreciate or understand the importance of meritocracy. Are you really that misinformed (and bigoted)? DEI is not about providing opportunity to unqualified minority and protected classes just to “meet quotas”; it’s making sure that fully qualified minority and protected classes get the same opportunity as their privileged white male colleagues. The only people who “lose” in DEI are the unqualified white men who’ve skated through life on their privilege rather than on merit. I’ll take the DEI cardiovascular surgeon over one of those guys every time.
John Burnett • Feb 28, 2025 at 10:55 am CST
Amen to this; “DEI” is tossed about with no real understanding. Vanderbilt is not required to change these initiatives and will end up on the wrong side of history.
