Vanderbilt right-handed pitcher Andrew Dutkanych IV was selected with the 201st pick in the 2024 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Dutkanych is the fourth Commodore to be picked in the 2024 MLB draft.
A potential first-round pick out of high school, Dutkanych was set back in his freshman season by a leg injury that kept the right-handed pitcher out of the Vandy Boys’ rotation for much of the year. The 2024 campaign provided a bounce-back opportunity with Dutkanych starting the season by holding the FAU Owls scoreless in his first appearance. Nevertheless, bad injury luck continued to plague the Indiana native into his sophomore season, as Tommy John surgery in March sidelined the pitcher for the second time in two years.
The 2022 top right-handed pitcher out of Indiana and one of the top recruits in the national class, Dutkanych displayed clear high-level talent in high school that — largely for the reason of bad health — failed to materialize through two years with the Vandy Boys. A pitcher with elite upside, the Cardinals make this pick largely banking on Dutkanych’s health to hold up long enough for his talent to shine through.
