UPDATE: This story was updated at 10:30 a.m. CST on June 12 to include a comment from Dr. Emily Pendergrass.
Residential College C was officially named Oliver C. Carmichael College today, according to Vanderbilt’s Instagram story and MyVU News. The third and final residential college will house its first students this fall.
This name will give Vanderbilt’s third chancellor a permanent home on campus after the Carmichael Towers East and West were demolished, removing his name on campus infrastructure. When asked by The Hustler about the naming process earlier this year, Chancellor Daniel Diermeier said the university “wouldn’t rush it.”
Construction on Carmichael College began after Carmichael Towers East was imploded in July 2021. The college, which was built to be LEED gold certified, is the final of three residential colleges in the West End Neighborhood, completing the 12-year project.
Carmichael College will house up to 305 students and will open with the new Carmichael Café as its dining option. Though the café is not yet listed on Vanderbilt Dining, the European café experience will have all-day service and a variety of beverage and food options according to MyVU.
Dr. Emily Pendergrass, the former head of West House, will serve as the college’s inaugural faculty head.
“I’m thrilled to call Carmichael College my new home! I’m excited to build a spirit of collaboration and create an immersive living-learning environment,” Pendergrass said in an email to The Hustler. “I look forward to engaging with Carmichael students, sharing ideas, and growing together. Plus, the Carmichael Café is the perfect spot for enriching conversations over coffee. Here’s to new beginnings and transformative experiences!”
