Vanderbilt has fired men’s basketball head coach Jerry Stackhouse, according to a press release by Vanderbilt athletics on Thursday afternoon.
“I want to thank Coach Stackhouse for his competitive spirit and service to this University for the last five years,” Athletic director Candice Storey Lee wrote in a press release.
Since being hired by Vanderbilt in 2019, Stackhouse led the Commodores to a 70-92 record. Stackhouse’s firing comes after Vanderbilt lost to the Arkansas Razorbacks 90-85 in overtime on Wednesday.
Stackhouse was hired by former athletic director Malcolm Turner to succeed Bryce Drew. Before coming to Vanderbilt, Stackhouse spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies. He previously enjoyed an 18-year NBA career as a player from 1995-2013. As a player, Stackhouse was a two-time NBA All-Star.
In the 2022-23 season, Stackhouse led Vanderbilt to its highest number of wins (22) since 2012. The Commodores also made it to the SEC Tournament semifinals and the NIT quarterfinals. After the season, Jordan Wright, Myles Stute, Quentin Millora-Brown, Trey Thomas and Malik Dia all left the program.
The 2023-24 Commodores finished the season with a 9-23 record. The Commodores went 5-8 in nonconference play and won just four SEC games this season.
