Each year, the Vanderbilt Performing Arts Community hosts Spotlight to showcase each of the performing arts organizations on campus to new students. While each organization gets just a few minutes to highlight their specialty, the energy is always high as students crowd to Langford Auditorium to cheer for their favorite acts.
Drama queens
Many theater and comedy organizations performed at Spotlight this year. From Tongue ‘N’ Cheek’s short improv set to the student-written skit from Iceberg Theater Co, there was no lack of theatrics on stage. Other highlights included songs from “Chicago” performed by Original Cast and “9-5” performed by Vanderbilt Off Broadway.
Dancing the night away
Vanderbilt is home to many talented dance groups, and they were all on display at Spotlight. The first dance performance was from VIBE and was quickly followed by other high energy sets from Vanderbilt Lakshya, Vandy Tap That and Momentum Dance Company. Each group had their own flair that set them apart. Confidance and BhangraDores both performed before intermission. After intermission, Vitality was quick to spark cheers from the crowd and Vanderbilt Philippine Dance Theatre had the crowd on the edge of their seats. Finally, VIVID and VIDA closed out the night.
Talented voices
From Blair to a cappella, Vanderbilt is full of talented voices. Spotlight featured many choirs on campus. The highlight was certainly the Melodores performance of “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” which closed out Spotlight 2023.
