UPDATED 4/13: Jerry Stackhouse denounced rumors of his interest in the Detroit Pistons head coach opening on Thursday morning. In a viral tweet, Stackhouse called the rumors “beguilement in the highest form”.
Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball’s turbulent offseason got a bit more bumpy on Tuesday. According to Eric Bossi of 247Sports, head coach Jerry Stackhouse is reportedly “very interested” in the Detroit Pistons job opening. Pistons coach Dwayne Casey recently moved from a head coaching position with the team to their front office at the end of the NBA season, opening up a spot on the sideline in Detroit.
“Stackhouse is very well regarded in NBA circles and numerous sources tell 247Sports that he’s indeed very interested in the Pistons opening,” Bossi wrote in his report. “His ability to draw up plays is highly thought of and he impressed many during his time as an assistant alongside Casey with the Toronto Raptors — he was also the G League coach of the year leading the 905 Raptors to a league championship in 2017 — and then coached with the Memphis Grizzlies before landing the Vanderbilt job.”
Stackhouse has previously been linked to other jobs, namely the UNC Chapel-Hill job opening in 2020, but was extended prior to the 2022-23 season by Athletic Director Candice Story Lee.
“I love it at Vanderbilt – Ramirra and I love living in Nashville and competing in the SEC,” Stackhouse added after the October extension. “It has become our home. This program has a unique and storied history and includes countless legends such as Perry Wallace, who was a pioneering player and force in the SEC. It is truly a special place to be a part of, and we look forward to building on that legacy.”
The fourth year head-coach guided his team to 22 wins in the 2022-23, the most wins Vanderbilt has had in a single season since 2012. Stackhouse’s success led to him being named SEC Co-Coach of the Year on March 6.
