Four years after John Augenstein was named SEC Freshman of the Year, the men’s golf senior put a bow on his Vanderbilt career. On Wednesday, Augenstein took home the coveted SEC Player of the Year award, making him the third straight Commodore to be named best-in-conference (Theo Humphrey in 2018, Will Gordon in 2019).
With the award, Vanderbilt men’s golf became the university’s first athletics program to win three consecutive SEC Player of the Year awards.
While the season may have been cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Augenstein had no trouble leaving his mark. In 2019-20, he led the SEC in stroke average (69.95), earned an individual tournament victory at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, finished second at the Nike Golf Collegiate and finished third in the Crooked Stick Collegiate.
The Owensboro, Kentucky native will add his most recent feat to a long list of awards that includes first-team All-American (Golf Coaches Association of America), first-team All-SEC, finalist for the Ben Hogan Award, finalist for the Haskins Award and a 2020 U.S. Open invitation. Augenstein was also slated to participate in the 2020 Masters before it was postponed until November.
Members of the men’s golf team took home three more honors: sophomore Reid Davenport was named to the All-SEC second team, freshman Willliam Moll was named to the All-Freshman team and sophomore Michael Shears to the Community Service team.
