Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis competed at the Crimson Tide Fall Challenge, hosted by the University of Alabama, this past weekend. The participating teams were Alabama, Auburn, Columbia, Florida State, Louisville, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech. The challenge was a hidden dual format, meaning that there were four singles and two doubles matches. Even though these matches don’t count toward any of the teams’ records, the tournament served as a solid benchmark for teams’ future outlooks.
On Day 1, Vanderbilt defeated Louisville, 4-2. Jack Satterfield emerged victorious in singles with a score of 6-3, 6-2, and in doubles with a score of 6-4. His doubles partner, Danil Panarin, lost against Louisville’s Walid Ahouda 6-3, 6-3. Callum Markowitz won easily against Louis Chusseau with a score of 6-0, 6-3, whereas Donghyun Hwang had more competition but ultimately defeated Matei Onofrei 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4). As a pair, the two lost against their former singles matchups in doubles by a score of 6-1.
On Day 2, Vanderbilt earned another 4-2 win, this time against Florida State. Satterfield fell to Azariah Rusher in singles 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-0. This time, Panarin beat Justin Lyons in a comeback win, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Together, they won their doubles match, 6-4. Markowitz faced a tough opponent but still prevailed 6-3, 7-5, and Hwang lost to Louisville’s Russell Lokko — who subbed in for the team on short notice — 6-4, 6-1. The pair, however, won their doubles match 6-4.
On the third and final day, Vanderbilt defeated Virginia Tech 4-2, finishing the tournament undefeated. Satterfield delivered a clinical performance, defeating Eyal Shimulov 7-5, 6-3. Panarin was even more dominant, defeating Patrik Jurina 6-1, 6-1. The pair then beat Drew Fishback and Jurina, 6-2, in doubles. Markowitz’s singles win-streak ended as Fishback defeated him 6-4, 6-2. His doubles partner, Hwang, earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Blake Hilsen, though the duo fell 7-5 in doubles.
Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis put on a strong showing in Tuscaloosa, sending a message to the rest of the SEC that the Commodores are hungry. Some of the team will be competing at an ATP 50 Challenger in Knoxville, Tennessee, starting on Nov. 3, so watch out for them there.
