Vanderbilt Swimming had three Commodores represent the program at premier postseason competitions this past month. First-year phenoms Aubrey Hull and Emily Constable competed at the National Invitational Championships (NIC) hosted by the CSCAA from March 13-15 while senior Kailia Utley swam at her second consecutive NCAA Championships after breaking Vanderbilt’s decades-long absence from the competition last year.
Hull competed in the 50, 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, qualifying for finals in the latter two. Her time of 54.19 in the 100 back finals was good for 12th place overall, and her finals time of 1:57.57 in the 200 back moved her up to 13th after she qualified at 18th.
Constable similarly qualified for multiple return swims. The New Jersey native participated in the 50, 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, returning for the 50 and 100 in the evening. Constable managed 13th place in both events, going 28.44 and 101.77 in the 50 and 100, respectively.
Both swimmers met NCAA Championship B Standards — Hull in the 100 back and Constable in the 100 breast — but did not receive an invite to compete because they were not among the top 322 swimmers nationally.
Utley, on the other hand, was among the top 322 for the second year in a row. The senior competed in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly, resetting her program record in the former to a time of 52.39. The swim also placed her 41st amongst the nation’s best. Utley fared even better in the 200 fly, finishing in 26th and narrowly missing her own program record in the event.
The postseason swims marked the end of one of the most storied careers in Vanderbilt Swimming history — Utley’s — but marked the beginning for two of its most promising prospects in Hull and Constable.
The Commodores will return to the pool next September for what is sure to be an exciting 2025-26 season.
