Vanderbilt pitcher Greysen Carter was selected with the 152nd pick in the 2024 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. Carter is the third Commodore to be picked in the draft.
A highly-touted prospect out of high school, Carter was ranked as the No. 1 player in Colorado for the class of 2021 by Perfect Game. Despite being an all-state basketball selection as a senior, Carter decided to take his talents to West End to compete for a spot in one of college baseball’s most prolific rotations.
During his freshman year, Carter made five appearances totaling just 5.1 innings. However, he righty saw a huge jump in usage in his sophomore campaign, where he made 13 appearances, including seven starts.Through 28.2 innings pitched, Carter accrued an ERA of 4.08. Perhaps even more impressively, Carter only allowed a .163 batting average against him. While his longest appearance was only five innings, Carter earned the win over Lipscomb without allowing a run. In the win, Carter demonstrated his ability to be not only a spark from the bullpen, but a quality starter.
It was Carter’s fastball that really turned heads his junior season. In a 12-2 win over Gonzaga on Feb. 23, the righty made headlines for clocking in at 103 MPH on one of his pitches.
Carter’s velocity helped Vanderbilt out of many jams — including two games in Vanderbilt’s Florida series where he was credited with the save. But Carter also shone as a starter in a matchup against Missouri, where he tossed 8.1 shutout innings to pick up the win.
Whether as a reliever or a starter, Carter’s versatility should be a great addition to the Yankees organization.
