Vanderbilt football will debut new helmets in Saturday’s home opener against 20th-ranked LSU, the team announced on Twitter Thursday.
The helmets pay homage to an old helmet design that had “Vandy” printed in script. The Commodores have not worn a helmet with the scripture since it was a regular uniform component from 1979-1983. This season, they will wear the new design for three games, according to Vanderbilt’s associate athletic director for communications Alan George.
The new design, a black lid with a chrome gold facemask, appears to be a more modern take on the vintage helmet. The script “Vandy” is black with a gold border, and the back of the helmet features a black and gold illustration of the Nashville skyline.
Vanderbilt will complement the helmets with its regular black jerseys, fit with gold numbers and grey sleeves, and black pants, with a dark gray chainlink design going down the leg.
The Commodores (0-1) will host the 20th-ranked LSU Tigers (0-1) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
