Vanderbilt student Adriel Bineza passed away earlier today, according to an email from the Dean of Students Mark Bandas.

Bineza was a senior in the College of Arts and Science. The email noted his involvement in VSG, Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science, Best Buddies and the Vanderbilt Prison Project.

“While the official cause of death has not been determined, police at this point do not expect foul play,” the email said.

There will be a support session for students in the Towers Formal Lounge at 7:30 p.m. University Counseling Center and Chaplain’s Office staff will be available. A memorial for Adriel will be planned, Bandas said.

If you would like to speak to someone at The Hustler, please email [email protected].

The full text of the email is below:

Dear Vanderbilt Students,

It is with great sadness that I share that one of our undergraduates, senior Adriel Bineza, passed away today. While the official cause of death has not been determined, police at this point do not expect foul play.

Adriel, a student in the College of Arts and Science, worked in service to the Vanderbilt community in many ways. He provided leadership to fellow students as chair of the Vanderbilt Student Government Economic Inclusivity Committee and was involved in a number of service organizations, including Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science, Best Buddies, and the Prison Project. Adriel was also a Questbridge scholar, and a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the premedical honor society, and the American Medical Student Association.

This is a very difficult time for Adriel’s family, friends, classmates, and faculty. This loss to our community affects us all. Please know that support services are available to help you during this difficult time. We urge grieving students seeking assistance to reach out to our support services available on campus:

  • There will be a support session for students tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Carmichael Towers East Formal Lounge. Staff from the University Counseling Center and Chaplain’s Office will be available to meet with students.
  • Call the University Counseling Center at 615-322-2571 to speak with an on-call mental health provider. Counselors are available for support in person or by telephone.
  • University’s Griefnet service 615-32-(2-2457): Available for support in person or by telephone.

I will share plans for a memorial for Adriel as they come together.

Please know that we are here to assist you in any way possible.

Mark Bandas
Associate Provost and Dean of Student
