Nashville’s vibrant fine arts scene has so much more to offer outside of its country-centric reputation. Here are just a few of the many exciting events coming up this month.
Frist Art Museum
One of Nashville’s greatest arts assets is the Frist, a contemporary art museum. The exhibition entitled “Chaos and Awe: Painting for the 21st Century,” which closes on Sept. 16, includes a display of modern art from around the world. Two other galleries exploring the photography of architecture and Nashville’s role in the Civil Rights Movement will be available for viewing until mid-October. Entrance into the Frist is free with a Commodore Card through VSG’s Passport to Nashville Program. Find out more about the museum and its exhibits here.
The Nashville Ballet’s rendition of Swan Lake
The Nashville Ballet kicks off their season with the time-honored classic Swan Lake, running from Sept. 21 to 23. Catching them dancing alongside the Nashville Symphony at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s Andrew Jackson Hall. Avenue Q
From Sept. 8 to 22, the Nashville Repertory Theatre will present Avenue Q, the Tony Award-winning comedic fusion of a puppet show and a musical. Avenue Q which has been making audiences laugh since 2003, and was presented by Vanderbilt Off-Broadway in 2016, now finds its professional residence in Nashville. The Nashville Chalk Fest
On Sept. 22 and 23, Centennial Park will host its annual Chalk Fest. Come watch professional artists make beautiful chalk murals, view a gallery of work from previous years, or take part in a community art project. Food trucks will be available throughout the day as well. Entrance into the festival is free, with all other proceeds benefiting the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences. Find out more here.
