Last night at 9:14 p.m., VUPD received reports from VA hospital police that an individual made threatening statements to two people in the smoking area outside the VA hospital and then walked toward 24th Ave. South, according to a Vanderbilt University representative.
Saying that an individual had reported hearing a shot fired in the area, VA hospital officers requested assistance from VUPD. The VUPD officers located a person matching the description of the individual from the smoking area at Fanny May Dees Park near the intersection of 24th Ave. South and Blakemore Avenue.
A witness who was also in the smoking area positively identified the suspect as the individual who made the comments at the VA hospital. Officers searched the area of the VA hospital and near the park, but could not locate a weapon or any evidence of gunfire. VUPD detained the individual until they determined that no crime had been committed.
The Hustler contacted VUPD at 9:15 p.m. last night after hearing reports of the incident, but officers couldn’t release specific details at the time. They stated that there was an unspecified incident on campus and that students were safe and able to move freely about campus.
